Event description

Description

The power of language in shaping perceptions of gender.

Learn how you can confidently tackle stereotypes in the workplace in this one-off workshop with Professor Amalia Arvaniti, Professor of Linguistics at the University of Kent.

In this workshop we will start with a brief overview of of linguistic stereotypes about women and uncover their effect on women's lives. We will then consider these stereotypes in the light of research results, and discuss practices that sustain and reinforce them, as well as practices that can help counter stereotypes and their effects, focusing particularly on the workplace.

Professor Arvaniti is one of the pioneers of Laboratory Phonology, which uses experimental and quantitative research methods to examine speech and its interaction with social factors, such as gender. Her research has been widely published and cited and has yielded crucial insights into the production, perception and structure of speech sound systems. Her research on uptalk in particular has attracted international attention as it busted stereotypes about who uses uptalk and why.
