This impactful full-day event explores the critical role of language in all communication. Our language significantly influences our interactions across various sectors and contexts. Open to all roles, this session draws on examples from social services, residential care, education providers, fostering, psychological services, and other trauma-informed settings.
We will examine the language used in conversations, interventions, records, meetings, and promotional materials. We will reflect on the terms we use to describe people and how our language shapes our biases, attitudes, and actions. We also look at why our words can be healing or harmful, or trauma-inducing or trauma-reducing, and we will think about how words can make worlds. One word can make a difference because “every interaction can be an intervention” (Treisman, 2017).
This session will highlight person-first language, externalising language, and the importance of intentional communication. Attendees will gain increased sensitivity to the power of language and learn practical strategies for using language with more care.
This session is highly relevant to the ambition of The Promise. It aligns with the professional responsibility to carefully consider language and actively reframe narratives to be more positive for care-experienced individuals in Scotland.

- To increase understanding of the power and impact of our words.
