Event description

Description

Poetry can convey our stories, ideas and emotions with great power. This workshop guides and inspires new writers with handy techniques to create writing full of power and feeling. The workshop includes an introduction with examples, discussion, idea development and lots of opportunity for the participants to be creative.

Seamus Kelly is a performance poet and has been working professionally since 2015. He has produced his short collection “Thinking Too Much” and performs and leads workshops across the North West and has been described by prominent Yorkshire poet, James Nash, as a writer of ‘passionate precision and great humanity’. His work ranges from people and places to family, society, modern life, the environment and cycling. His work can be hard hitting and emotional and doesn’t shy away from topics like inequality, illness and death but it is family friendly with little or no use of strong language. Seamus’ style is relaxed with an occasional heartfelt rant and does not rely heavily on rhyme or traditional rigid forms. He has performed his poetry across the North of England and has appeared as a guest on several local radio shows as well as being invited to run workshops by Rochdale and Oldham Councils, various writing groups and schools. Appearances have included three years at the Eroica Britannia Festival in Derbyshire (2015-2017), Altrincham Hidden Arts Festival and the Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival Fringe (2016-2017). You can find out more about him on his website here.
