Event description

Description

The Power of Positive Printing

This is a workshop that looks at the power of positive thinking & how this translates into words & finally into print, using letterpress. We will first investigate how our thoughts affect our world & the images & words this evokes in us. Then, after a process of contemplation, drawing and a brief discuss about Reiki Energy Healing & how what we think, say & feel affects our daily lives, we will use both image and text to transform our thinking and to reset and refresh, by immersion in a creative process. Finally, the text we write after translating our images into words, will then be turned into wonderful (and entirely unique) letterpress prints, for you to take home & keep. Through this process we will consider how working with both image and language can transform our thinking, positively.

The .918 press is a private studio and letterpress printing workshop in East London, where over 300 cases of wood and metal type (many over 100 years old), are waiting to be transformed into your printed texts. We will be using the same process of working with movable type, which was invented by Gutenberg in the early 1450s. Working with a Vandercook Universal 1 printing press & the press’s extensive collection of historical letterpress fonts, this will be an amazing lesson in how printing began, and an opportunity to explore the power of language and print, in transforming our lives.

Brief overview:

Part 1: Positive Perceptions & Being Present

10.00am-1.00pm

  • Meditation – We will start the day with a brief meditation, to quieten the mind, relax & become present in the moment.
  • We will then talk & discuss how Reiki & positive Thinking can affect the power of our thoughts
  • This will be followed by an introduction to the principles of the Mandala
  • Afterwards, we will engage in drawing a Mandala, as a silent process
  • Coffee
  • Translation from image to text, brainstorming what words the image &/or process of drawing evokes. How can language transform our thinking? Creating a sentence, set of words/single word, to summarise the process, and/or encapsulate the ideas we want to express.
  • Lunch.

Part 2: Positive Printing
2.00pm-5.30pm

  • Positive printing – a brief introduction to how it works, choosing fonts/setting a specific typeface, using a Vandercook Universal 1 printing press & producing prints for you to take away.

Please wear clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty. No heels in the studio. No phones or internet during the actual workshop (perfectly fine during breaks & lunch). Tea, coffee, biscuits will be provided throughout the day.
