Description

Join us on World Book Night when Sarah Matthias will talk about how she came to write her novel, A Berlin Love Song, which was long-listed for the Carnegie medal 2018.

The book explores a relationship between a boy in the Hitler Youth and a Roma gypsy girl during WWII and is a moving story, offering an insight into the life of the Roma gypsies. Sarah's novel shines a light on what Angela Merkel has called the “forgotten holocaust”.

Sarah will tell us about the research she did and what inspired her writing.

About the speaker:

Sarah studied at Oxford University and then worked for the BBC in London as a trainee producer. She left the BBC to qualify as a barrister and when her children were born she became a university lecturer in her specialist subject, Land Law and Trusts.

As her family grew, Sarah decided that writing novels might fit in better with family life.

She has written three medieval mystery stories: The Riddle of the Poisoned Monk, Tom Fletcher And The Angel of Death and Tom Fletcher And The Three Wise Men.

Her first novel was long listed for the Branford Boase prize for first time writers. Her subsequent Tom Fletcher novels are also medieval murder mysteries for children.
