This webinar looks at how dance teaching has become increasingly professionalised through increased accountability and compliance expectations, in other words, how dance teaching is seen as a profession as opposed to an occupation. Participants will be introduced to some of the factors and structures which construct, deconstruct and reconstruct dance teacher identities through examining values, attitudes and beliefs across the domains of time, space and practice. While the webinar does not include break-out group discussions, it does provide space for participants to think about and reflect upon their dance teaching practices which shape and inform who they see themselves as dance teachers.

• Have an understating of dance teacher identities being shaped by values, attitudes and beliefs.
• Through self-reflection, have an understanding of how values, attitudes and beliefs are evidenced through teaching practices and expectations.
• Have been introduced to the concept of time, space and practice in shaping dance teacher identities.

Webinar Presenter

Dr Michelle Groves

With over 40 years of experience as a performer, teacher and educator, Michelle Groves was appointed Director of Education, Royal Academy of Dance in 2016. Her initial dance training was through the Royal Academy of Dance in Australia, before holding various positions within the College of the RAD and the Faculty of Education. Michelle’s interests are in dance teacher education in higher and professional contexts, the professionalisation of dance teaching and professional identity formation of dance teachers. She gained a Doctor of Education from UCL, Institute of Education London.
