Event description

Description

Social media is addictive. Many of us don't even realise how often we use it. Our children and young people are often scrolling through Facebook whilst holding a conversation with us at the same time. Immediately after closing Facebook, they'll open Instagram. Close Instagram and open Twitter... This can be a never-ending circle for many people, but especially young people, who are so keen to always be 'switched on'.

But do you really know just how many different social media platforms exist? Do you ever wonder what impact they are having on our children - does it impact their mood, their sleep, their exam grades, etc.? Do you ever think about the impact of our young people constantly seeing picture-perfect models? Do you think your child has ever been approached or bullied online, by someone they might not even know?

At our event, you will hear from a range of speakers about both the positive and negative impact of social media. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions you have too.

Guest Speakers:

We are delighted to welcome a number of guest speakers to present at this event. The O2 Guru team will be speaking about the technological aspects of social media - drawing attention to the various apps and features that influence social media. We have a social media and celebrity psychologist, Dr Arthur Cassidy, speaking about the consequences of social media that he sees all too often through his work. The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program will present a research project - being undertaken in conjunction with the School of Psychology at the University of Ulster - on the negative psychological effects of social media. We will also have opening and closing remarks by ABC Council Lord Mayor Gareth Wilson and the Portadown Chamber of Commerce.

Additional Information:

The event is free to attend. We will have drinks and a finger buffet (to include vegetarian and vegan options) running during a break between the presentations - please contact us if you have any specific allergies or dietary requirements. Free parking is available at the centre.
