Do you ever feel tension in your relationship with your mother or daughter? Moments of closeness mixed with misunderstanding, guilt or pressure?
The mother-daughter relationship is one of the most important in a woman’s life – but it’s often misunderstood, or seen from only one side. Where a mother sees strength and guidance, a daughter may remember pressure or loneliness. This bond can be deeply nurturing, yet also a source of lasting pain and conflict.
In this workshop, we will explore the psychology of the mother-daughter bond across different life stages, from childhood to adulthood and beyond. We will reflect on how identity, autonomy, and emotional needs evolve over time, and how becoming a mother can reshape the relationship in unexpected ways.
Workshop Highlights:
- Discover how early childhood experiences shape mother-daughter dynamics
- Explore the emotional push-and-pull of adolescence and identity formation
- Understand how becoming a mother yourself can transform the relationship
- Reflect on how this relationship evolves later in life, as roles and needs change

About your host:
Dr Terri Apter is a psychologist, writer and Fellow Emerita of Newnham College, Cambridge. Her work on family dynamics – from difficult mothers to surly teens, and from in-law tensions to sibling love and jealousies – has been published to great acclaim and translated into many languages. She decodes the arguments that so often bewilder and frighten mothers of teenage daughters, showing how understanding can transform teen daughter/mother relationships. ‘Altered Loves: Mothers and Daughters during Adolescence’ was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and ‘The Confident Child’ was awarded the Delta Kappa Gamma's Educator's Prize. ‘The Teen Interpreter’ incorporates the newest research in adolescent neuroscience with familiar family dynamics and was hailed in The Times as ‘brilliant’ while her recent book on cross generational relationships,‘Grandparenting’, is described as 'magnificent' and 'a work of great sensitivity.'
