Rumination is a common yet often misunderstood mental habit that can trap us in loops of negative or obsessive thinking. In this workshop, Dr Jonathan Iliff will uncover the causes and effects of rumination, explaining why our minds sometimes fixate on distressing thoughts and how this shapes our mental health.
Drawing on both personal experience and his work with patients, Dr Illiff will reveal the psychological mechanisms behind rumination – and how it differs from productive reflection. You’ll also discover its surprising upside: while rumination can weigh us down, it can also fuel creativity when understood and harnessed effectively.
Join us to gain practical knowledge and strategies for transforming rumination into a tool for balance, growth, and a healthier mind
Workshop Highlights:
- Understand the causes and effects of rumination
- Unpack the psychological theories that underpin this cognitive process
- Discover practical strategies to break free from the cycle of repetitive thinking
- Explore effective tools for managing rumination, whether you struggle with rumination yourself or want to support others in managing it

About your host:
Dr Jonathan Iliff is a psychiatrist and medical doctor in the NHS, with a background in neuroscience and psychedelic drug research. His research focused on the use of psychedelic compounds, like LSD and psilocybin - the active ingredient in magic mushrooms - a promising new treatment for depression. Today his focus is clinical - focusing on helping with people, and their problems in the here and now. His mission is to stoke conversation about health and mental health, change attitudes that persist in even the most tolerant parts of our society, and encourage innovation like the use of psychedelic drugs that aim to improve the lives of the billions of people that suffer directly and indirectly from mental health disorders.
