Description

We hear a lot about how data and technology are revolutionising the way we deliver public services. What is less clear is what this means in practice, how it impacts our day-to-day work, and how policy makers at the start of their careers should be incorporating this potential into their approach.

How, what and why should the public sector make its data open?

What are the best examples of open, agile use of data in the public sector today?

What are the main challenges standing between us and the effective use of data and technology in the public sector?

These are just some of the questions we will be discussing at this joint event of Apolitical, Transport for London and The Public Bubble. A panel of seasoned experts will ponder the expanding role of open and agile data and technology across the various branches of the public sector, and the opportunities this presents for the future of government and our public services.

Speakers include:

  • Kit Collingwood-Richardson - Kit leads the data team for the Universal Credit programme in the Department for Work and Pensions. She previously worked for the Ministry of Justice, where she was Head of Digital at the Office of the Public Guardian before moving to MoJ’s digital team. Kit is passionate about offering radically improved services to citizens while meeting departmental spending challenges, about increasing digital capability in government, and about joining up policy making with service delivery. In 2017, she began the 'One Team Gov' movement, which aims to improve government services and ways of working by joining up different disciplines and sectors.

  • Rakesh Gaur - Rakesh is a Principle Engineer in Innovation and Technology for Transport for London, championing better understanding of London Underground's technical and business challenges within the UK innovation landscape. Since 2011, he has been part of the LU Systems Engineering Team as Professional Head of RAM, providing thought leadership and business maturity growth to one of UL and TfL's key Mayoral challenge areas. During this time he has led the development of futuristic 'visions' in order to provoke creative thought and discussion on the future of transport.

  • Mike Rose - Mike has recently joined the Open Data Institute as their new Commercial Manager primarily looking after new business opportunities. Before that Mike worked for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Environment Agency leading the transition to become an Open Data organisation and the release of 10,000 Open Datasets. Mike believes that Open Data is just one part of the Open Culture that we need to develop to maximise the benefits of the skills and technology that we now have, and is keen to continue to work with government(s) to maximise the benefits of Open.
