About this Event

The race for equality for single parents - In collaboration with the Parents’ Network

About the event: In this event, we will hear from Ruth Talbot, a single parent campaigner who established the Single Parent Rights campaign. While the Equality Act 2010 outlaws discrimination towards certain groups who are deemed to have ‘protected characteristics’, single parenthood is not included. This means that, despite the challenges single parents face, invariably through no fault of their own, employers, businesses and policy makers aren’t encouraged to proactively consider how they treat single parents and where unfair treatment occurs, it cannot be legally challenged. Ruth will talk about the discrimination single parents face (with results from the national survey into single parent discrimination) and how she and other single parents are trying to change this. There will also be a Q and A session where attendees can ask questions.

Who the event is aimed at: This event is aimed at parents, future parents, anyone who undertakes a parenting role, line managers who want to get the best out of their parent employees, and those interested in, or working in the equality and/ or the parenting sector.

What you will gain from attending: An understanding of the discrimination faced by single parents - one of the last remaining marginalised groups who are ignored by policy makers, including an insight into how widespread discrimination towards single parents is, and what you can do to address this.

The link to join this event will be sent to all those booked on in advance of the event
