Spotlight on Strings

The Red Brick Sessions return to the University of Salford with an eclectic programme. Young British conductor Lee Reynolds and BBC New Generation Artist Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad join the orchestra for this special evening.

The concert opens with James MacMillan’s For Sonny, a moving tribute in memory of a friend’s grandson followed by Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad performing Britten’s Lacrymae for viola and strings.

Stravinsky’s Concerto in D explores the richness of the string orchestra which is also brought to the fore in American modernist composer Henry Cowell’s Hymn, chorale and fuguing tune No.8.

The programme concludes with two of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Novelettes.

The concert will be hosted by Elizabeth Alker (BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio 3) who will also invite the audience to join in a discussion during the interval.

The Red Brick Sessions

The BBC Philharmonic, in partnership with the University of Salford, explores new and rarely performed pieces – bringing audience immersion and new technology to the forefront.

The sessions will be featured in an enhanced live stream on the orchestra’s website, which enables the audience to explore the orchestra, receive synced information about the music and even view a live orchestral score.

Bring your devices and help us explore a new way of experiencing an orchestra.

The Red Brick Sessions are brought to you in partnership between the BBC Philharmonic, the University of Salford, Salford City Council and BBC Research & Development.
