The Rev'd Dr Gavin Ashenden: From KGB To PC
Fri 21 April 2017, 19:30 – 21:00 BST
The York Tories are pleased to welcome The Rev’d Dr Gavin Ashenden, former honorary chaplain to HM The Queen, to campus to discuss cultural marxism within society and faith. The Rev’d Ashenden resigned as honorary chaplain to HM The Queen earlier this year over Glasgow Cathedral’s decision to allow parts of the Koran to be read which stated that Jesus was not the son of God during the Ephinany service. Rev’d Ashenden subsequently resigned to allow himself to be able to speak more freely on matters of faith and to preserve Her Majesty's political neutrality. The Rev’d Ashenden, on his decision, said “I am fairly clear in my own mind that my duty to my conscience, to my order, to my understanding of Christianity and my vocation is that I am supposed to be speaking out in the public space on behalf of the Christ I serve.”.
The talk titled ‘From the KGB to PC’ will start with the Rev’d Ashenden discussing the interrogations he received at the hands of the KGB during his bible-smuggling days in the Soviet Bloc. He will then go onto a discussion around the advent of cultural marxism looking at the privileging of groups over others, with the aforementioned resignation over Glasgow Cathedral used as an example of this mis-shaping of one ideology to meet the preferenced demands of another. The Rev’d Ashenden will then conduct a short Q&A.
As well as being Honorary chaplain to HM The Queen, The Rev’d Dr Ashenden spent 23 years at the University of Sussex as a senior lecturer and senior chaplain, lecturing in the Psychology of Religion, Literature, and running an MA programme in Monotheist Mysticism. Furthermore, he presented a weekly Faith and Ethics radio programme for BBC Radio Sussex, as well presenting the international Faith & Ethics podcast. As of last month, the Rev’d Ashenden is no-longer an Anglican clergyman.
We look forward to seeing you there,
