The Right to Roam in The City: An Urban Safari
Join veteran footpath campaigners Don Lee (The Open Spaces Society) and Gloria Gaffney (Pedestrians Association) and learn about the fight for the right to roam in the city. An informal conversation will introduce their campaigning work, and why they feel it is important. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussions. Don and Gloria will share their extensive knowledge and experience preserving rights of way, and current work to register footpaths before the definitive maps are closed in 2026. We will also discuss inspirational struggles of the past such as The Kinder Trespass and why we should remember them.
We will then go on an urban safari through alleyways, ginnels and backwaters of the city. Several of these have been subject to controversial closure bids by landlords and / or Manchester City Council. These have been resisted in court or through planning Inquiries. Expect some forthright views on the important issues around public access. Please make sure you dress appropriatley for the weather and wear comfortable shoes for walking in
