About this Event

The Rise and Fall of Al-Andalus (Islamic Spain)

In 711 AD Arab and Berber troops from North Africa launched an invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. Within a decade they had subdued the Visigoths who had occupied Spain since the end of the Western Roman Empire. Islamic rulers changed the face of Spain producing a civilization rich in architecture, art and learning whilst at the same time maintaining relative tolerance to the Christian and Jewish inhabitants of the peninsula.

Meanwhile, the Christian Kingdoms that clung on in the far north of Spain recovered lost territories in what became known as the Reconquista. After the 13th century the Muslim Kingdom of Granada remained as the only part of Spain under Muslim rule. Remarkedly Granada was not conquered until 1492 thus bringing to an end nearly 800 years of Muslim rule on the Iberian Peninsula.

This course will consist of four sessions on Thursday at 10am . An hour long presentation followed by and an opportunity for Q&A. Content for each week is as follows:

Thursday 21st January - The Moorish Invasion of Spain and the establishment of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

Thursday 4th February -The decline of Islamic Spain and the Christian Reconquest of the Peninsula.
