Event description

Description

Meet by ticket barriers at Tottenham Hale Station (Victoria Line) at 10.30am

Finish at Walthamstow Marshes Café about 12.30pm – easy 10 minute walk back to Tottenham Hale

Summary: The River Lea (also known as Lee) has always provided London with water for drinking, farming, industry and travel.

We explore a short stretch of the River Lea Navigation and the splendid Victorian Markfield Beam Engine. We then explore the enormous Walthamstow Marshes Nature Reserve, a very short walk away, and investigate farming, industry and London’s water supply.

More details

We will explore the River Lea navigation, walking the towpath a short distance to the great Victorian Markfield Beam Engine, built in Yorkshire and used for pumping sewage into the River Lea.

We then explore the fantastic marshes of the Walthamstow Wetlands Nature Reserve, opened 2017, for terrific industrial archaeology and great wildlife. We will finish at their café – all a short walk from Tottenham Hale Station. https://walthamstowwetlands.com/
