The Role of AI in Industry

Join UoB Business Club for valuable insight into applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in industry and discover the support available from the University of Birmingham and the Science & Technologies Facilities Council to businesses seeking to investigate potential applications of AI in their processes.

Speakers include:


Mohan Sridharan

School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham

Mohan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computer Science. His primary research interests include knowledge representation and reasoning, machine learning, computer vision and cognitive systems as applied to autonomous robots and adaptive agents. Mohan develops architectures and algorithms that enable robots to collaborate with non-expert human participants, acquiring and using sensor inputs and high-level human feedback based on need and availability.

Mohan will discuss potential applications of AI in industry, focusing on explainable reasoning and learning and robot manipulation in an industrial context.

Simeon Clow

Business Engagement Manager - Hartree Centre, Science & Technologies Facilities Council

Simeon Clow is a Business Development Manager at the Hartree Centre and is enthusiastic about working with companies who are interested in further developing their HPC, Big Data or AI capabilities, as well as organisations who are yet to start the journey towards Industry 4.0 adoption.

By Royal Charter, the Hartree Centre is a department within the Science and Technology Facilities Council, which falls under UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), reporting directly into the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Its mission is to transform UK competitiveness, by accelerating the adoption of High Performance Computing (Modelling and Simulation), Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (Machine Learning & Deep Learning). The Hartree Centre work with SME’s through to large Enterprises on collaborative R&D projects, typically through grant-funded programmes or via commercial engagement.

Paul Cornick

Business Engagement Manager - Science 2 Industry, University of Birmingham

As Business Engagement Manager for Science 2 Industry, Paul works to connect businesses with the STFC Midlands Centre, hosted by the University of Birmingham through the Science to Industry (S2I) programme. The S2I programme offers SMEs:

  • A unique pathway to access some of the most cutting-edge science and tech facilities in the UK
  • Access to a community of over 2000 scientists, technologists and engineers ready and waiting to solve technical problems, offer comprehensive diagnostics and excellent advice
  • Access to grants for technical problem solving

The S2I programme works closely with businesses to understand your technical problem and the impact it has on your business. The programme can match you to an appropriate facility to achieve the desired outcome and offer hands-on support for the application process. S2I offers support to SMEs across all sectors including: advanced manufacturing and engineering; agriculture; food and drink; professional business and finance; construction; digital economy; life sciences and medical technologies.
