Event description

Description

Today, artist-curated shows, artist led spaces and even art fairs are flourishing. It now seems almost unusual if a major venue doesn’t have an artist-curated show in their programme. This begs the following questions:

What is the role of the Artist-Curator?

What do art professionals have to learn from these shifting exhibition models, not to mention their increasing success?

Be Smart About Art talks to Beth Hughes, Collection Curator at the Arts Council Collection, about her experiences working as a curator in collaboration with Artist-Curators. Beth will offer unique insight into the freedom of being less restricted, by operating outside an organisation, looking in. She has seen first-hand the resulting learning curves for artists and organisations alike, accompanied by adjustments made by both sides in response to the other. Beth notes that the external, creative influence of the Artist-Curator is by and large one of joy and freedom!

In the talk, we’ll cover the following questions and more:

Why might an artist choose to curate an exhibition?

What are the benefits and challenges for a new Artist-Curator?

How can the Artist-Curator help artists gain exposure, credibility, build community and push creative practices forwards?

How are artists working with public and commercial galleries to curate shows? (And how might this help raise awareness of your own art as well as increase credibility?)

What about the practicalities? What are some key points that an artist and organization need to know or agree beforehand?

How do freedom, creative practice and decision-making work for Artist-Curators?

---------

A Q&A session with the audience will follow the facilitated conversation.
