Event description
This two-hour session is designed to support Anglia Ruskin University colleagues who are new to chairing a viva.

About this Event

This session is designed to prepare you for managing the event that often seems to be the most stressful and significant day of a doctoral candidate’s life: their viva voce. The most important role of the Chair is to be prepared, well informed, calm, and professional, in order to ensure the event is fair and carried out according to our regulations. This interactive session includes discussions about the expected and potentially unexpected things that happen before during and after a PhD and DProf viva at ARU. Being aware of these issues, and ensuring you have measures in place to overcome them, can make the whole event positive whatever the final decision of the examiners. Our discussions are broken into ten sub-topics: a reflection on experiences; before the viva; setting up the room; meeting and briefing the examiners; supporting the candidate on arrival; chairing the session; achieving an inclusive viva; questions about our regulations; concluding the examination; reporting the outcome.

A good Chair can make a difficult viva become a positive experience where the candidate understands the examiners’ critical commentary, and becomes energised to submit a revised document, with a clear understanding of the shortcomings determined by the examiners.

This session will be led by Dr Alan Coday from the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Please note that this course is only open to Anglia Ruskin University staff. Please register using your anglia.ac.uk or aru.ac.uk email address if you wish to attend. Registration using any other email address will be declined.
