Event description

Description

The Research Consortium on Education and Peacebuilding is hosting a two day dissemination event to be held between Wednesday 20 April and Friday 22 April 2016 in Amsterdam.

The Research Consortium on Education and Peacebuilding is a partnership between the University of Amsterdam, the University of Sussex, Ulster University and UNICEF, alongside in-country partners, and aims to contribute to one of UNICEF’s Learning for Peace Programme key objectives,

‘contributing to the generation and use of evidence and knowledge in policies and programming related to education, conflict and peacebuilding’.

The dissemination event on education and peacebuilding, 'Foundations, Findings and Futures', will begin with a public opening of the seminar and debate on Wednesday evening to set the Foundations for further discussions. Thursday focuses on Findings, and starts with an opening speech on the main analytical framework followed by a range of interactive sessions based on the Consortium research findings.

The Research of the Consortium has focused on three thematic areas at global level and country case studies including Pakistan, Myanmar, South Africa and Uganda:

  1. The integration of education into peacebuilding processes at global and country levels;
  2. The role of teachers in peacebuilding;
  3. The role of formal and non-formal peacebuilding education programmes focusing on youth; and the cross-cutting themes of gender and violence.

The Friday morning programme looks at the Future and aims to identify ways forward for the role of education in peacebuilding, and vice versa. Discussions will respond to current debates in connection to the global Sustainable Development Goals and cast a forward-looking perspective. It will include a direct focus on how research findings can inform and support the strategic policy direction of international bodies, INGOs, and national governments.
