Event description
Speaker: Professor Keith Townsend, Department of Human Resources and Employment Relations, Griffith University, Australia

About this Event

Abstract: Throughout the world paramedics provide life-saving assistance to sick or injured patients as the first response on the scene of an emergency. In Australia specifically, around 20,000 salaried ambulance officers and paramedics and over 6000 volunteers collectively respond to more than three million calls for assistance each year but their work environment is very different to most workplaces; each call presents a new place of work requiring the constant identification of hazards and risk mitigation. Unfortunately exposure to violent assault is very common for paramedics. This research is framed with systems theory to examine the types of violence paramedics are exposed to, the frequency with which they are exposed, and the systems of support provided through the HRM systems and beyond.

Bio: Keith Townsend is a professor in the Department of Employment Relations and Human Resources at Griffith University in Brisbane. He has been the recipient of five Australian Research Council grants and has published over 80 journal articles in a wide range of outlets including Work, Employment and Society, Human Resource Management Journal, and British Journal of Management. Keith has edited ten books and performed research on a wide range of topics including flexible work and working time, employee voice, HRM systems, and frontline managers. Keith readily admits that he doesn’t know very much, but he doesn’t know very much about a lot of things.
