Event description

Description

This session will introduce the producing practices of Sally Rose and Xavier de Sousa, and explore what the role of a ‘producer' can be, and how producer’s might collaborate with artists, and establish their own projects. We will investigate what being a producer entails, what the term means (or equates to in other contexts), and look at some case studies from Sally & Xav’s work with artists and organisations including; Rosana Cade, jamie lewis hadley, Dickie Beau, Sheila Ghelani, The Place, SPILL Festival, and their Producer Gathering network.

You can expect to hear about: working independently, supporting the work of artists across art forms and ways in which we can share experiences and knowledge. A practical session will look at the essential elements that are required for getting any project off the ground; we’ll share tools and tips for project planning, budgeting, developing work, and importantly communicating your project.

Sally Rose is an independent freelance arts producer and event organiser. She works with a number of independent artists supporting their practices and developing existing and future works including: Sheila Ghelani, Rosana Cade, Dickie Beau, Vincent Gambini, Chris Green, Eugénie Pastor, Laura Dannequin, and Abigail Conway. Sally also works on a project basis with arts organisations, most recently Wellcome Collection and SPILL Festival. Sally was a resident producer at the Live Art Development Agency from 2014-2016.

Xavier de Sousa is an independent performance maker and producer. Having grown up with Europe’s oldest performance art festival, CITEMOR (Portugal), he has been working solidly in theatre, dance and live art since graduating from Kingston University in 2010. Alongside his performance practice, he produces the work of live artists jamie lewis hadley and Nicola Hunter, choreographers Laura Burns, Evangelia Kolyra & Sivan Rubinstein and performance maker Tom Ross Williams. He was Producer in residence at the Live Art Development Agency, and is at The Place, and is currently developing an independent producers network with Sally Rose which proposes to be a point of network, mapping and sharing of resources for producers of all backgrounds.
