This is the Inaugural Lecture of the QM-UNIDROIT ITCL Advisory Board lecture series.

Topic: “The role of UNIDROIT in the harmonisation of law.”


The QM-UNIDROIT Institute for Transnational Commercial Law (ITCL), co-directed by Professor Anna Veneziano and Professor Rosa Lastra, is launching the QM-UNIDROIT Lecture Series coordinated by Dr Kamala Dawar. It will begin mid-October 2025 and run for the whole of 2026. The aim of the lecture series is to share the wide expertise of the Advisory Board along with the indispensable role of UNIDROIT in the harmonisation of transnational commercial law. The in-person lectures will be followed by a networking opportunity at CCLS to allow for further discussions and interactions.

Maria Chiara Malaguti is Full Professor of International law at Università Cattolica Sacro Cuore (Milan/Rome, Italy). She is currently legal advisor to the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs on trade matters and to the World Bank on modernization of payment systems, financial markets and governance. She chairs the UNCITRAL WG1 on Micro, Small and Medium-Size Enterprises. International arbitrator in particular for foreign direct investments, supports the General Attorney’s Office of Italy in all procedures opened against Italy until now. In August 2020 the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs appointed her as President of the International Institute for Unification of Private Law, UNIDROIT since 1 September 2020 for a mandate of five years. She is the first woman to be appointed in such position.

Until 31st July 2003 she was senior expert in the Payments Systems Division of the European Central Bank, advising in legal matters to the Section on Securities Settlement Systems. Already in a previous period of consultancy at the European Monetary Institute in 1996 she had dealt with issues concerning financial markets and global governance. Dr. Malaguti holds degrees in law and in economics, an LLM from Harvard Law School and a PhD from the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. She has various publications, mainly focusing on financial markets, harmonization of law and sovereign debt. In the past, she has been legal assistant and chief of cabinet at the European Court of Justice and still practices as an attorney in Rome.
