Event description
The roots and fruits of the arts and crafts movement - a sermon and Sunday service with Bishop Michael Marshall

About this event

A fresh assessment of the relationship between the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth and the Arts and Crafts Movement is the subject of this compelling lecture by one of the Church of England’s most inspiring speakers.

Bishop Michael Marshall will trace the connection between the radical William Wordsworth and John Ruskin, examining Wordsworth's love of nature and Ruskin’s reaction against the urbanization of the industrial revolution. He will explore Wordsworth’s care for the environment and to what we now call ‘sustainability’.

Building on recent scholarship (Jonathan Bate, Romantic Ecology: Wordsworth and the Environmental Tradition and Radical Wordsworth: The Poet who changed the World), the lecture will reassess Wordsworth's place in the evolution of what was to become one of the most significant design movements of the 19th century.

Bishop Michael Marshall was Vicar of All Saints, Margaret Street, Bishop of Woolwich, founding Director of the Anglican Institute in St. Louis, Missouri and Adviser on Evangelism to the Archbishop of Canterbury. His many books include ‘The Gospel Conspiracy’, ‘Restless Heart’ and ‘Expectations For Evangelism’ and his major biography of Edward King, Bishop of Lincoln, is being published this year. Bishop Michael was Rector of Holy Trinity, Sloane Square for 10 years (1997-2007) and under his leadership the church moved from the brink of closure to the vibrant community we know today.
