Event Details

The Rose of Jericho.
Violence. War. Love. Discovery. One man's journey.
Written by Alex Martinez
Performed by Kevin Hely
Produced by Francesca Martinez

This show runs for two nights. Sat 19th May (doors 7.30pm) and Sun 20th May (doors 6.30pm)

The show is 55 mins. There will then be a break, followed an interview between Kevin and Francesca Martinez.

An ex-British army soldier casts a darkly humorous eye over his Irish childhood, relationships, experiences of war, and three events that have changed his life. He is still fighting but it's a different war now... As the UK goes to war on the centenary of WWI and the Easter Rising, this is a play for today.

'Astonishing monologue... visceral performance' ***** (BroadwayBaby)
'Tour de force... sublime' ***** (British Theatre Guide)
'Full of inventive ideas... unrelenting, committed performance' **** (Scotsman)
'Rich and provocative... instantly engaging' **** (The List)
'Compelling... recommended' (FringeReview)
'Evocative… memorable' (Times)

Alex Martinez (father of Fransceca) is a Spanish-born novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He grew up in London after his novelist father sought political asylum from Franco in 1960. His first play, Private Thoughts, was successfully premiered at the Hackney Empire Studio Theatre in 2009. Since then he has completed two new plays, The Devil's Tail, which has already been translated into French for production in France, and The Rose Of Jericho. In 2003, Alex was commissioned to write several sitcom pilots for Channel 4 with Stewart Lee as script editor. In 2005, he was commissioned by the BBC to co-write three further pilot scripts for a project produced by Charlie Hanson, the producer of Extras, and script-edited by Richard Herring.

Kevin Hely (partner of Francesca) is an Irish actor, director and producer. He co-founded Fly by Night Theatre Company in Dublin in 1992: with them he performed in the premieres of several plays by Conor McPherson, including Inventing Fortune's Wheel, Radio Play, A Light in the Window of Industry, The Stars Lose Their Glory, the one-man show, The Good Thief, and directed This Lime Tree Bower. In 2009, he co-founded Theatre Ortas: with them he has toured the world with Francesca Martinez In Deep, What The **** Is Normal?! and Wobbly Manifesto, and directed Private Thoughts at Hackney Empire Studio. He has performed The Rose of Jericho at Edinburgh Festivals 2014 and 2016, and throughout the UK. Films: I Went Down and Saltwater. He trained at the Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College Dublin.

Francesca Martinez is an award-winning comedian who has toured internationally including sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival, the Melbourne Comedy Festival and the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Francesca’s a regular face on TV and is most known for her starring role in Ricky Gervais’ EXTRAS. Ricky is a huge supporter of hers and hand-wrote the role for her. Oh yeah, and she has mild cerebral palsy but she much prefers the word ‘wobbly’. She is an outspoken opponent of welfare reform by the government, she uses her public profile to raise issues about disability and fight for a fairer system.
