Event Details

Dear London Fellow,

Please join us for a stimulating breakfast event hosted by FRSA London and the RSA's own Fellows Artists’ Network: Is the Fourth Plinth a model for achieving change, or is it a space dedicated to art for art’s sake?

Since 1999, the ‘empty’ north-west plinth in Trafalgar Square, London, has been home to some of the world’s best contemporary art. You are invited to join us at the ICA’s Fourth Plinth exhibition for a free private view of the development and controversies of the Fourth Plinth programme, including a display of commissioned maquettes by some of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists. The viewing and breakfast will be followed by a stimulating debate on the role and impact  of the art commissions that have been displayed on the plinth.  Find out more about the exhibition here.

Located at one of the most visited spots in London, the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square is seen as a platform for the portrayal of the state of the nation. Its artworks reflect society and our identity in an increasingly fast- paced, multifaceted and global world. Yet, from the polemics stemming from the various commissions, it appears that we have strong divergent views on what these artworks should represent: whether they should glorify our past and present in all their forms, or provoke critical questions and introspection, or simply be a bit of fun.

Places for the debate are strictly limited, so please take care to register either for the viewing from 8.30am or the viewing plus debate from 10am.  There are some access restrictions to the first floor, where the debate will be held in a beautiful room overlooking St James Park.  Please get in touch if you anticipate needing any assistance.

Once you register you will receive a confirmation email.  A few days before the event you'll be sent more information about speakers, how to connect with like-minded Fellows, and hopefully a menu so you can plan what to buy for breakfast!

Kind regards,

Ann Kristen Glenster  - RSA Artists’ Network.

Roxanne Persaud, London Region Fellowship Councillor
