Description

Thanks to the CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust, St John's Smith Square is offering free tickets for 8-25 year olds to the Ruisi Quartet concert in February.

Winners of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Young British String Players, the Ruisi Quartet has established a reputation as a charismatic and expressive ensemble, delivering performances that are “strikingly immediate, committed and direct” (Chichester Observer). Founded by British-Sicilian brothers Alessandro and Max, the quartet performs regularly throughout the UK and Europe. From Elizabethan England to 20th-century Russia, in tonight’s concert the Quartet brings together some of the most influential and well-loved composers of the last 400 years in a fascinating programme. Purcell’s Fantasias, some of the earliest music written specifically for string ensemble, sit alongside Stravinsky’s boundary-pushing Three Pieces, highlighting the beauty and invention found in both works. The quartet then visits music from the ‘Father of the string quartet’, Joseph Haydn, with a work from his set of Op. 71, written after a prolonged stay in London. The concert ends with the romanticism and fervour of Mendelssohn’s string quartet in A minor, one of the composer’s earliest and most passionate works, and an undisputed heavyweight of the romantic repertoire.
