Description

THE SAN FRANCISCO BEAT POETS

Once dismissed as mere cultural ephemera, the San Francisco beat poets have proved to be remarkably durable. Again they speak to a country whose well-being -- indeed, whose very existence -- is ominously threatened.

John Whiting was in the Bay Area in the fifties when it was all happening and he was an enthusiastic if marginal participant. Then in the early sixties he became Production Director at KPFA, the avant-garde Berkeley radio station which had been and was still broadcasting them all, and so he got to meet and talk with many of his ex-gurus.

In 1966 he became Pacifica Radio's London Correspondent and was soon involved with the American Embassy's Cultural Affairs Department, who asked him if he'd give a talk at an art college on the San Francisco beat poets. In those days the art colleges were beehives of cultural activity and he ended up giving the talk all over England and Scotland.

John's sound studios occupied the October Gallery's basement for two decades from the second year of its existence and so the Gallery was his first choice for the talk's revival. Like the poets themselves, the presentation is once again contemporary, and so it will be given almost exactly as before, with hardly a word changed. This time however, with the benefit of Power Point, over a hundred photos have been added. It'll be déjà vu all over again!
