If you find yourself spending a fortune at the alterations shop, leaving hems in to be shortened or lengthened, then this is the class you need. Once you have the basics up your sleeve you will save yourself a fortune! Learn how to make simple alterations and essential Sewing Survival Steps and you will be sewing on buttons in no time, replacing zips and mending holes before they even appear.

This class will give you what you need to know for mending and altering your clothes. We will also be introducing some awesome up-cycling ideas on how to reinvent your clothing.

Why learn to repair and reinvent?

In today's throw away society, learning to sew is lifelong sustainable skill set that can both save us money and make us money. Reinventing and redesigning allows us to dress individually and find our own style. Owning something that no-one else has. By investing time to look after, launder and repair our clothing, rather than replacing it, we return to having an emotional connection with our clothes. It helps to consider the journey our clothes make; from the farmer planting the cotton seed, the weaver weaving the cloth, the pattern making, the stitcher and the point of purchase. Our clothes are our second skin and they should be respected.

About your tutor: Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 36 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion, film costume, and self employment in Northern Ireland. She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step. Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students.

The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television and in magazines. This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where she can show students every clothes that she has re-designed, altered and mended.

Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment is provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish. A notepad, pencil and a camera are recommended.

Materials required at first class: Please bring a few items of clothing from your wardrobe that need repairs and also a garment that you would like to be changed into something else.

Maximum in class: 5 students. Class sizes are limited to 5 people so that students benefit from focused guidance. There must be a minimum of 3 bookings for the class to run.
