About this event

Science & Tech • Science

In early 2024, The Guardian raised questions about the "sudden rise of AuDHD," a term for the overlap between ADHD and Autism. Until recently, many in the medical field considered these two conditions separate. In this workshop, Dr. Tom Nicholson will explore how our understanding of ADHD and autism has evolved, challenging traditional views of neurodivergence and the way social media often portrays it as a "superpower."

Could there be a more nuanced way to understand neurodivergence? This talk will dive into the core traits of both ADHD and autism, while shedding light on the experiences of those who live with both. Why do many people not realise they are autistic until after being diagnosed with ADHD and starting stimulant medication? How can someone be the life of the party yet feel drained afterward? Join us to explore these questions and more.

Doors open at 6:45pm, talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!

About your host:

Dr Tom Nicholson is an Assistant Professor of mental health nursing and a speaker, trainer, and advocate for neurodiversity and ADHD. Tom's PhD project explores the lived experiences of parents whose children are undergoing ADHD assessment, listening to, and retelling their changing stories over a period of two years: From waiting list, to diagnosis, to living with a diagnosis. Diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, Tom uses his personal lived experience of ADHD alongside his clinical and academic background to give a multitude of perspectives to his work.
