Autistic individuals often experience shame more intensely – but this is rarely addressed in clinical or educational contexts. This workshop explores why autism and shame intersect so strongly and offers practical ways for parents, educators, clinicians, and communities to foster empathy, reduce shame, and create more positive patterns.
We’ll also examine how cultural pressures – focused on productivity, neurotypical conformity, and constant self-optimisation – amplify shame, adding layers of exclusion and perceived inadequacy. Whether you’re autistic or support autistic people, participants will gain both understanding and actionable strategies to build more affirming relationships and systems that work for them.
Workshop Highlights:
- Explore why autistic individuals experience shame so intensely and how it affects daily life
- Understand how cultural pressures around productivity, conformity and personal growth influence shame
- Learn practical strategies for reducing shame and fostering empathy
- Gain actionable tools to create more affirming relationships and supportive systems
