Sugar is often discussed as a moral issue, a lack of willpower, or something we simply need to “cut out.” The science tells a very different story. This talk explores how sugar interacts with the brain’s reward system, why cravings can feel intense and repetitive, and why some people experience sugar as addictive. We’ll look at what dopamine really does, how modern ultra-processed diets amplify reward signals, and why blood sugar swings can drive hunger and food noise.
We’ll also look beyond the brain to explore the gut–brain axis. Emerging research shows that the microbiome plays a meaningful role in appetite regulation, cravings, mood, and stress responses, all of which shape our relationship with sugar. Grounded in high-quality research and real-world experience, in this session, BANT Registered Nutritionist Sarah Osborne offers a compassionate, evidence-based lens on sugar that moves beyond blame and restriction. You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of your biology and environment, and practical ways to manage cravings without fear, shame, or extremes.
Workshop highlights:
- Explore the intricacies of how sugar interacts biologically with your body and brain
- Discuss the latest scientific research into sugar, nutrition and mental health
- Understand cravings, reward systems and appetite regulation
- Learn practical tips to develop a good relationship with sugar and manage cravings without shame
