About this event
Nanotechnology is the science of the small. By small, we are talking about one-millionth of one millimetre. It is at this scale that much of nature operates. Plants and insects repel water, animals camouflage, copper kills bugs. Recent developments in technology have allowed us to work at the nanoscale. By designing and building at this scale we see materials that have remarkable properties. In this discussion, find out about the materials and devices we are working on which are allowing us to make antimicrobial and antiviral surfaces as well as sensors that will detect pathogens with incredible sensitivity.
Speakers
Professor Alistair H Kean, Professor of Medical Nanotechnology, University of the Highlands and Islands
Chair: Professor Robert Henderson FRSE, Professor of Electronic Imaging, University of Edinburgh
Curious times call for curious minds
The RSE invites you to Curious, its summer events programme running from 09-27 August. All eyes will be on Scotland’s leading thinkers and practitioners in this thought-provoking series of free online talks and intimate conversations designed to question and be inspired by the world around us to reach new insights.
• Our planet: with a particular focus on the climate crisis in the lead up to COP26.
• Health and wellbeing: covering the dichotomy of mental and physical health, while examining broader wellbeing matters.
• Innovation and invention: from the innovation that drives our path forward, to the inventions which created the modern world.
• Covid-19 Living within a Pandemic: exploring our lives through the pandemic and lessons that can be learned.
