Event description
The Desperate Literature Prize is awarded annually to an innovative piece of short fiction.

About this Event

Join the Second Shelf in hosting this year's selection of female writers published in 'Eleven Stories,' the anthology born from the shortlist.

Reading on the evening will be:

Francesca Reese (winner 2019)

Frances Gapper

Rose Chen

Caitlin Ingham (runner-up 2018)

+ Eley Williams (judge), Attrib. and Other Stories, Influx Press, ruminating on the judging process

The Desperate Literature Prize aims to celebrate the best of new short fiction and provide winners the exposure for their writing. In 2019 Desperate Literature partnered with ten different literary and artistic institutions to ensure winners and runners-up receive not only cash prizes, but opportunities to be published in multiple print and online locations, and to perform in multiple European cities.

Eley Williams said of the shortlist, 'the entries revealed all the seething, the subtle and the searing possibilities of the short story - it was a pleasure and privilege to celebrate them all."

Entries for the 2020 prize open in December. More information on the prize can be found here.
