About this Event

Sometimes, it seems that the best way to get something to happen is to take a chance, a sort of leap of faith. Last year, Christine and I set about re-cycling some beautiful stained-glass panels into something new. These were originally skilfully crafted by a very dear friend of ours to hang in a nite-club long ago.

I imagined another yurt, bigger than the first one, an event space that could be opened up and expanded and customised to suit any event, then I learnt that I could get 6 metre long bamboo poles from a place in England and found myself hooked.

I pencilled a design and we started building. The walls had to be 10 ft high to accommodate the glass profiles, the whole structure ambitiously large… The bamboo arrived. Very exciting but much thicker than expected. Slight re-think required. We built the structural pillars and skeleton, which looked a little stone-henge-like, then the panels, the roof hub, the bamboo shoes, the floor undercarriage, the door frames, I quickly came to realise that I had aimed a little high. But we had already gone too far. There was no turning back, no choice but to keep swimming.

We built a magnificent new yurt. Then it remained dismantled in my shed for almost a year while we built the giant baby puppet, Eva, and until we could work out how to get best use out of our new event space.

We realised that the best way to properly finish the new yurt and to have any fun with it would be to assemble it at home on the farm. We have been working anyway towards creating a sort of wild sanctuary here where wild creatures, wild plants and wild people can co-exist in an ecologically symbiotic and mutually inspirational environment that the new yurt would sit well in…

So, one hundred and fifty posts, another fifty sheets of plywood, another two thousand feet of timber and still the far shore is a long way off. Keep swimming.

We’ve spent all this summer bringing the new yurt home, chasing the goal we set out for and it sits here well, it looks like it had always been here and it is indeed very conducive to spiritual wellbeing and connection to nature.

But it’s cost us a flippin fortune and we’ve accumulated a big pile of debt in the process so in order to help dig our way out of the pit that we find ourselves in we’ve decided to do what we know how to do best, throw a party!

Anyone who was at the first Hooley back in 1993 now proudly says “I was at the very first one!”.

We are inviting our friends to attend the very first grand opening night of our new space; “The Secret Ballroom” and are planning an excellent line-up of music, magic, dancing and fun, a night that will still be remembered in another 26 years.

We’ve hosted only free events here for almost three decades so you should realise that money has never been our motivation but this time we have to raise some funds.

We are inviting our friends to invite their friends so that theoretically, everyone there will share in the spirit of the event and we are suggesting a donation of £20 per head to be included on the guest-list. If you can’t make it, you can still make a donation to say you helped get “The Secret Ballroom” off the ground.

Book your place on-line, limited parking and camping are available on-site for free. Numbers are limited so book early if you can. We suggest you wear your wellies and bring a torch because “The Secret Ballroom” is a trek through fields.

Frankie and Christine look forward to seeing you on the 12th October.
