Description

Secret Life of Objects

This course is designed to show teachers how to use the objects in museum collections to develop creative and cross-curricular learning opportunities, both during pupil visits and in the classroom.

Places on the course are free to book and the network will sponsor your attendance by supporting the cost of supply staff up to £100 per day.

Over the course of the day you will learn practical techniques for using a collection’s items including objects, paintings, and documents to inspire creative outputs across a range of subject areas. At the end of the day you will have a number of ideas and resources to take back to the classroom with you. All materials will be provided.

These day long courses aim to leave you with new strategies and ideas to take back to your classroom. Lead by practising artists with specific knowledge of arts in educational contexts each day combines both hands on and active practise as well as the opportunity to share and network with other teachers, colleagues and artists.

The Secret Life of Objects resource provides a simple framework which can be adapted for any key stage. It will empower you to use museums independently and give learners the skills and tools to investigate objects, making the museum or collection a place for creativity and discovery. This learner centred approach fosters creative habits of mind and is applicable across humanities, expressive arts and literacy within the new curriculum.

This session is led by Karin Molson, the learning manager at Monmouthshire Museums Service. She has years of experience working with pupils in the classroom and in the county’s museums. She has developed the Secret Life of Objects creative approach in partnership with Lucy-Ann Pickering from The Royal Mint Museum and Mark Batchelder from The Winding House Museum.
