The Semantic Web

This month we have 2 talks on Semantic Data, with Mischa Tuffield and Jarred McGinnis.

The State of the Semantic Web 2012: Industry Advances and the New Family of Standards, Mischa Tuffield

The talk will consist of an overview of the various Semantic Web initiatives in industry, focusing on the various technologies which seem to be gaining traction. The talk will finish by touching upon the changes made in the current W3C SPARQL WG and the RDF WG to the existing standards.

Mischa Tuffield (@mischatuffield), currently the Head of Research Engineering at PeerIndex, has been working on the realisation of Semantic Web since 2004.  Mischa was the Senior Research Engineer at Garlik, where he built the worlds first production Semantic Web stack application. Mischa also worked on both Garlik's open-source SPARQL store 4store, and the proprietary version 5store. Mischa was the Editor of the W3C's Social Web Incubator Group's final report, and was an active member of the current W3C RDF WG.

Semantic Data at Press Agency, Jarred McGinnis

On a daily basis, the Press Association creates, curates and distributes vast amounts of content and data as well as providing a range of services to all major media organisations and many global corporations. Recently, the Press Association was appointed as host national news agency for the London 2012 Olympics.

In order to address the growing demand for ‘fast, fair and accurate’ content and data, the Press Association recently committed to a large-scale project to redesign its IT infrastructure by putting semantic web technologies and principles at its core. By the adoption of established standards such as IPTC’s G2, RDF and the use of technologies such as cloud-based computing, open and RESTful approaches, XML-driven DBs and triple stores, the Press Association addresses real business needs such as, the managing of enormous, disparate and heterogeneous sets of data, reducing silos and streamlining content and data interchange within the organisation and between PA and its customers.

This talk will focus on our experiences at PA with wilds of Linked Data, the design decisions behind our news ontology, SNaP, and the products and services we are currently driven by this new "double-barrelled" approach to Dynamic Semantic Publishing.

Jarred McGinnis (@JarredMcGinnis) is the Research Manager, Semantic Technologies, at the Press Association. Dr. McGinnis completed his PhD in Informatics at the University of Edinburgh in 2006. After a two year KTP project with the University of London and The Press Association investigating the role of technology in the news industry, Dr. McGinnis continued his work at the Press Association focussing on the future role of Semantic technologies such as text-mining, description logics and Linked Data. He is also a visiting Research Fellow at King's College London.
