Event description
ITP is delighted to welcome Prof Melissa Raphael to the University to share her insight into this fascinating aspect of the feminine divine

About this Event

The Shekhinah: The Female Face of the Jewish God or a Masculine Idea of the Divine Feminine?

In Jewish tradition, the Shekhinah is a female figure of the indwelling presence of God. This illustrated talk will both celebrate the fruitful role her image has played in the growth of contemporary Jewish women's spirituality and ask whether its association with the home and the consolation of grief might also reinforce some conservative ideas about the nature of the feminine in Judaism.

Melissa Raphael is Professor of Jewish Theology at the University of Gloucestershire and teaches modern Jewish thought at Leo Baeck College, London. Her books include Thealogy and Embodiment (1996) Rudolf Otto and the Idea of the Holy (1997), The Female Face of God in Auschwitz (2003), Judaism and the Visual Image (2009) and Religion, Feminism and Idoloclasm: Being and Becoming in the Women's Liberation Movement (2019, forthcoming).
