The Shortest Day 2025: Strata Incognita

We close the year on our Vimeo channel with the celebration of The Shortest Day [ED+C], an initiative that recognises the format and expressive forms of the short film.

For this edition, we invited the Rural FilmFest to create a programme that addresses the growing concern for sustainability and the care of our planet, as demanded by the current Anthropocene. Thus, the four short films that make up this year’s cycle, entitled “Rural cinema: a tool for wisdom and understanding”, spark different ideas and use diverse tones to bring us closer to spaces in Spanish and Mexican geography, as well as to the experience and culture they have treasured for centuries.

The short films in this showcase invite us to embrace new ways of engaging with these environments in a non-intrusive and non-destructive manner. Undoubtedly, the programme conveys the idea that we must act and that, perhaps, there is still time to change things.

Fourth screening: Strata Incognita

This experimental short film was part of the Spanish Pavilion at the 2023 Architecture Biennale, which was presented under the title “Foodscapes. The Laboratory of the Future”. Its creators (architects, filmmakers and directors of photography, founders of two production companies) use the expressive tools of experimental and artistic audiovisual work to project new spatial and vital concepts aimed at shaping a better world.

Synopsis: Just a few centimetres beneath your feet, millions of creatures kill, eat, reproduce, ally and fight with each other. They transform death into life, purify the water you drink, make the air you breathe breathable and produce 95% of the food you consume. You are digested soil. Every time you eat, the substances in the soil are reconstituted into the matter that makes you. Yet many of the creatures and ecosystem processes that keep soils functioning resist being captured by knowledge production methods still constrained by regimes of visibility. Soil is our closest alien world.

Strata Incognita proposes a trans-scalar and transtemporal journey through the geographies that articulate soil as an infrastructure for food cultivation, but also as an ecosystem and somatic archive of crimes, memories and mythologies.

The short film navigates the hidden landscapes that build and destroy soils, connecting the biological and chemical processes that occur underground with the industrial production of pesticides, fertilisers and biostimulants, as well as with the geopolitical and environmental conflicts associated with their production and distribution.

In an itinerant mise-en-scène, four mysterious agents intervene in the soil, appropriating the paraphernalia of the scientific laboratory and archaeological excavation, while transforming their aesthetics of truth and forensic certainty into dialectical weapons and tools of political imagination. Strata Incognita invites us to rethink how we cultivate our relationship with soils and to unlearn the epistemic assumptions that underpin our hyper-extractive approach to this world that is both so close and so strange.

All titles will be available on the Instituto Cervantes Vimeo channel for 96 hours, starting at 9:00 [GMT] on the specified day.

Cerramos el año en nuestro canal en Vimeo con la celebración de El día más corto [ED+C], una iniciativa que reconoce el formato y las formas expresivas del cortometraje.

Para esta edición, propusimos al festival Rural FilmFest que un programa que nos enfrentara con la creciente preocupación por la sostenibilidad y el cuidado de nuestro planeta, como una demanda que se nos hace desde el actual Antropoceno. Así, los cuatro cortometrajes que componen este año el ciclo titulado «Cine rural, herramienta de sabiduría y entendimiento» disparan distintas ideas y se expresan desde diferentes tonos para aproximarnos a espacios de la geografía española y mexicana así como a la experiencia y la cultura que han atesorado durante siglos.

Los cortometrajes de esta muestra nos invitan a abrazar nuevas formas de incidir en estos entornos de modo no intrusivo ni destructivo y, sin duda, en el programa que conforman habita la idea de que tenemos que actuar y de que, quizás, estemos a tiempo para cambiar las cosas.

Cuarta proyección: Strata Incognita

Este cortometraje experimental participó en el Pabellón de España de la Bienal de Arquitectura 2023, que se erigió con el título «Foodscapes. El laboratorio del futuro». Sus creadores (arquitectos, cineastas y directores de fotografía fundadores de dos productoras) utilizan las herramientas expresivas del audiovisual experimental y artístico para la proyección de nuevos conceptos espaciales y vitales con las que componer un mundo mejor.

Sinopsis: A pocos centímetros bajo tus pies, millones de criaturas se matan, se comen, se reproducen, se alían y se pelean entre sí. Recomponen la muerte en vida, depuran el agua que bebes, hacen respirable el aire que respiras y producen el 95 % de los alimentos que ingieres. Eres suelo digerido. Cada vez que comes, las sustancias del suelo se reconstituyen en la materia que te compone. Sin embargo, muchas de las criaturas y los procesos ecosistémicos que hacen funcionar los suelos se resisten a ser capturados por métodos de producción de conocimiento aún encorsetados por los regímenes de lo visible. El suelo es nuestro mundo alienígena más cercano.

Strata Incognita propone un viaje transescalar y transtemporal por las geografías que articulan el suelo como infraestructura para el cultivo de alimentos, pero también como ecosistema y archivo somático de crímenes, memorias y mitologías.

El cortometraje navega los paisajes ocultos que construyen y destruyen los suelos, conecta los procesos biológicos y químicos que ocurren bajo tierra con la producción industrial de pesticidas, fertilizantes y bioestimulantes, así como con los conflictos geopolíticos y ambientales asociados a su producción y distribución.

En una puesta en escena itinerante, cuatro misteriosos agentes intervienen el suelo apropiándose de la parafernalia del laboratorio científico y de la excavación arqueológica, a la vez que transforman sus estéticas de verdad y certeza pericial en armas dialécticas y de imaginación política. Strata Incognita invita a pensar otras formas de cultivar nuestra relación con los suelos y a desaprender los presupuestos epistémicos que sustentan nuestra aproximación hiperextractiva a este mundo tan cercano como extraño.
