Event description
The Skellern Lecture 2020 and JPMHN Lifetime Achievement Award

About this Event

The Skellern Lecture was established in 1980 in order to remember the contribution of Eileen Skellern who was an influential figure in shaping the modern profession of MHN nursing in the UK.

One of Eileen Skellern’s last contributions was the planning of the First International Psychiatric Nursing Congress in 1980, but sadly Skellern passed away shortly before the conference. The inaugural Skellern Lecture was delivered two years later by Baroness McFarlane to remember Eileen’s contribution. Over the following years the Skellern Lecture was held bi-annually attracting a roll-call of leading nurses See www.skellern.info).

In 2006 the Skellern Lecture series was revitalised as an annual event and in collaboration with the Journal of Psychiatric & Mental Health a new Lifetime Achievement Award was introduced with the aim of celebrating a sustained career contribution in the field of mental health.

The 2020 event is hosted by Middlesex University, and the recipients are:

  • Dr Russell Ashmore, Skellern Lecturer: “The Fall of Icarus, the Trials and Tribulations of the Informal Patient in the 21st Century”.
  • Professor Eimear Muir-Cochrane, JPMHN Lifetime Achievement Award.
