Event description

Description

Most coaching theory and practice focuses on the skills that a coach has or needs. As coaching has developed in terms of its popularity and scope, more and more people are becoming skilled coaches. However, until now, there has been little research or understanding of what a skilled coachee looks like and what those skills are. Paul Stokes' PhD research examined the skilled coachee concept and he has developed a framework for understanding those skills and how they might complement those of a coach. These skills include ones that enable the coaching process to proceed in terms of speed and depth but also skills that are used, often unconsciously by coachees to protect themselves from embarrassment or threat. Examples will be given from research data to illustrate the application of these skills. We will discuss the framework and examine the implications for coaches, coachees, coaching trainers and professional bodies.

About the presenter:

Dr Paul Stokes is Director of the Coaching and Mentoring Research Unit at Sheffield Business School, Sheffield Hallam University. For the last 17 years, he has worked as a coach, mentor, consultant and supervisor on coaching and mentoring programmes, both within the University - notably the MSc in Coaching and Mentoring - and outside as part of leadership development programmes. He is the co-author of two best selling texts on coaching and mentoring and numerous book chapters and journal articles on coaching and mentoring theory and practice. Recent corporate clients include: Nestle, Norgren, River Island, Sheffield City Council, Barnsley Hospital, Diageo and SIG Ltd.
