Event description

Description

Alison and Peter Smithson were part of Isokon founders Jack & Molly Pritchard's network. Towards the end of their joint career, Alison and Peter Smithson started to work for the German furniture manufacturer Axel Bruchhäuser. What ensued over some twenty years were many exhibition designs, various attempts to manufacture the Smithsons’ furniture, a series of extensions to Bruchhäuser’s factory in Lower Saxony, a museum dedicated to the cantilever chair, and extensive modifications and additions to Bruchhäuser’s house. It was a remarkably harmonious relationship and it took the Smithsons’ work into issues and themes that it had not addressed before while re-casting some from their earliest work. This lecture will describe these various projects and attempt to assess how they extend our understanding of the Smithsons’ work.

Mark Crinson is Professor of Architectural History at Birkbeck (University of London). His most recent books include Alison and Peter Smithson (Historic England, 2018), The Architecture of Art History(Bloomsbury, 2018), and Rebuilding Babel: Modern Architecture and Internationalism(I B Tauris, 2017). He directs the Architecture Space and Society Centre at Birkbeck, and is President of the European Architectural History Network.
