The Social Analysis of Penality Across Boundaries – Workshop Series has been organised in partnership between the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research and the Crime and Society Program of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral in Argentina.

This workshop series aims to bring together a wide range of current work from around the world on aspects of penal politics, policies, practices and institutions.

We hope to continue to expand the scope for comparative analysis of penal questions, and to stimulate cross-regional collaboration and exchange between scholars north and south.

We hope thereby to build a mutually supportive community of researchers despite and because of their strikingly diverse situations.

The first workshop in the series will take place on Tuesday 28th September at 4pm (BST) online via Zoom (the link will be sent to attendees before the event).

Speaker: Professor Lisa Miller, Rutgers University USA

Title: “American Exceptionalism or Exceptionalism of the Americas? The Politics of Lethal Violence, Punishment and Inequality”

Lisa Miller is Professor of Political Science, Rutgers University. She is the author, among many other publications of The Myth of Mob Rule: Violent Crime and Democratic Politics (Oxford University Press, 2016) and The Perils of Federalism: Race, Poverty and the Politics of Crime Control (Oxford University Press, 2008).
