Background
Residents in Ilkley have been working together to improve our local environment, from reducing our use of plastics, to campaigning to stop raw sewage being discharged into our river. One key action is the addition of a sustainability section to our Neighbourhood Plan, to secure a better local environment including:
- Clean water in our taps and river
- Protecting and enhancing our natural environment on the moor and in our parks
- Encouraging renewable energy
- Reducing waste
- Reducing carbon and having clean air
The group trying to protect our river has, working with the Town Council, made some progress in securing some ugrades to the local sewage plant.
There is definitely more that the Environment Agency and Yorkshire Water can do, but we can also do our part as a community.
You will have seen in the local press and social media how concerned Ilkley and Burley residents are about the impact of contaminated water on our wildlife and people and animals swimming in the river. This meeting is a chance to find out more about the issues and also see what we can do as a community to prevent it.
As well as discussing the issue of a clean river, the meeting is also a chance to find out about other local schemes to support our environment and to hear about and contribute to the Ilkley Sustainability Plan.
