The truth is in the faders.

Join us at AAA Vinyl Coffee House & Bar on Cold Bath Road for the launch night of The Sound Society — a new series of intimate, behind-the-faders events that bring music to life through the ears of live experience.

And what better way to kick things off than by celebrating Amy Winehouse’s birthday, not with a playlist and polite applause, but with her actual live multitrack recordings — remixed in real time, with the stories that never made it past the tour bus door.

Dave Swallow, live sound engineer and tour veteran, will be diving into archived sessions from Amy’s shows — sharing how her iconic live sound was built, tweaked, and held together night after night. From desk setup to vocal dynamics, it’s a rare peek into the process behind one of the most unforgettable voices of a generation.

Expect:

  • A live mixing demonstration using archived multitrack recordings
  • Anecdotes from behind the curtain (and sometimes under the desk)
  • A deep listen to how we built her live sound — and why it mattered
  • Some of Amy’s favourite tunes on the jukebox before and after
  • A gin in your hand and a goosebump down your spine

No prior sound knowledge needed. Just bring your ears, your curiosity, and your love for Amy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know anything about sound engineering to enjoy this?

Absolutely not. If you’ve ever enjoyed a live gig, got goosebumps during a song, or just fancy a night out with something a bit different — you’re in. No jargon required. Just ears and curiosity.

Will Amy Winehouse be there?

In spirit, yes. In person, sadly not — though her voice will fill the room. We’re revisiting her live multitrack recordings and celebrating her legacy with care, love, and a few secrets from the tour days.

What’s actually happening on the night?

Think of it like a live documentary you can feel in your chest. Dave will be at the mixing desk, revisiting shows he worked on with Amy, remixing them live, and telling the stories behind them — the tiny tweaks, the high-wire moments, the backstage chaos and calm.

Can I bring my mates?

Yes! Bring the sound nerd, the casual listener, the Amy superfan — even the mate who just wants a G&T and a seat. But space is limited, so book early.

Is it seated or standing?

We’re keeping it intimate and relaxed, so there’ll be plenty of seats. That said, if you’re the sort who prefers to hover by the bar with a thoughtful lean, we’ve got room for that too.

Is this a one-off?

Nope! This is the first night of The Sound Society — an ongoing series exploring the art of live sound through real recordings, real stories, and real atmosphere. Keep an eye (and an ear) out for what’s next.

Will there be food or drinks?

The bar will be open throughout, serving all the usual suspects — and a few specials if we’re feeling fancy. Maybe even a “Back to Black” cocktail if we can make it not taste like regret.

What time should I arrive?

Doors open at 7:00 PM. The show starts at 7:30 PM-ish — but don’t worry, we won’t dim the lights and cue a dramatic entrance. Come early, grab a drink, settle in.
