The Soweto Kinch 4
Event Information
About this event
Beaming in from a studio somewhere in Birmingham, the Soweto Kinch 4 is a new all-star band which will explore both hip hop and jazz influences. Hot from leading a number of workshops for young people during the day, the SK4 will both play an hour long set and then answer questions.
Soweto Kinch hardly needs an introduction. An award winning alto-saxophonist and MC, Soweto is one of the most exciting and versatile musicians in both the British jazz and hip hop scenes. Undoubtedly, one of the few artists in either genre with a degree in Modern History from Oxford University, he has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and two MOBOs. Plus a string of acclaimed albums.
Joining him in the band is Arnie Somogyi, one of the leading UK jazz bass players. In demand for over 30 years, he’s both a band leader in his own right and an in-demand sideman, releasing a number of acclaimed albums under his own name (including AMBULANCE, featuring trumpet legend Eddie Henderson, and IMPROVOKATION). He’s also worked, recorded and performed with many of the world’s leading jazz musicians, as well as international stars including Tom Jones, Charlie Watts and Amy Winehouse.
The band is completed by Elliot Sansom, BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year finalist 2016. Under his Spotify alter ego, Elliot Jacques, he’s top of the Spotify ‘Peaceful Piano’ playlist with ‘Kaleidoscope’, which has been played over 4 million times. Jim Bashford is an incredibly versatile drummer across a wide range of styles. His credits include touring with Katie Melua and he’s recently recorded with iconic contemporary jazz saxophonist, Paul Dunmall.
This event will be interactivelty streamed via Zoom
