ACCESSIBILITY WORKSHOP

The art we make should be made available to and enjoyed by, everyone, everywhere.

But how often do we fail on simple things like making our websites accessible to all? And how well do we connect to audiences who may have issues accessing work?

The opportunity of online platforms and digital technology can not only help us reach much wider audiences, it can also help us create a more user friendly experience for all visitors. Join us at New Art Exchange to find out how.

The Space in association with the BBC Academy presents a free workshop for arts professionals, exploring how to make the arts more accessible using digital technologies and online platforms.

Claire Hutchinson, Head of Brand and Communications for The Space, and an expert panel of guests explore sessions designed to help identify both the issues and opportunities around reflecting and engaging audiences with accessibility issues, and ways to close the gap.

Delegates will have an opportunity to listen to expert panels and will also breakout into smaller groups to identify and discuss areas they could improve on in their own organisations in order to share learnings. These include;

How can you make your website and social media content as accessible as possible?
Yacoob Woozeer from Open Inclusion will share his extensive insights which include practical top tips.

What digital tools are available to make the arts more accessible in arts venues?

Melanie Sharpe from Stagetext shares her experiences in providing live subtitles for arts venues and theatre performances and Mariana Lopez from University of York who has worked with VocalEyes talks about her work around enhanced audio descriptions for theatre and museums.

How can you connect with older audiences?
Claire Ford from We EngAGE, talks through her projects
using digital creativity with older audiences. From the Armchair Gallery project which uses digital tools to give elderly people virtual tours of the worlds cultural collections, to We engAGE, which uses iPads to help those with Dementia engage and connect to the arts.

Abid Hussain talks about his work as Director of Diversity at Arts Council England, and how they are celebrating age with initiatives and funds, directed at older audiences.

Jo Verrent is a speaker, writer and activist, who creates, produces and curates art. She is a senior producer at Unlimited, which celebrates and commissions disabled artists. Jo will share her extensive insights into the future of making arts more accessible.
