About this event

The Spice Apothecary: Crafting Spiced Remedies, Balms & Treasures

Step into the aromatic world of spice — a realm of warmth, ritual, remedy, and storytelling.

In this immersive workshop, we’ll journey into the sensory heart of the spice apothecary, exploring how spices like clove, cinnamon, and ginger were once treasured not only for their flavour, but for their power to heal, protect, and enchant.

Alongside tales from ancient kitchens and stillrooms, you’ll create a fragrant collection of spice-infused remedies and rituals to take home — all crafted with natural ingredients and historical inspiration.

🌶️ What We’ll Explore:

  • The healing uses and curious folklore of clove, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cayenne, and more
  • Spices in love charms, protective blends, ancient rituals and trade routes
  • Lively hands-on activities: smell-and-guess game, light-hearted “spice personality” quiz, and more

🌿 What You’ll Craft & Take Home:

  • 🍯 A spiced honey electuary — warming, soothing, and delicious
  • 💋 A luxurious spice lip balm
  • 🌟 An energising spice & sugar body scrub
  • 🌶️ A joint & muscle rub with cayenne and warming oils

✨ Plus:

  • A Mini Spice Lore Booklet with recipes, traditions, and spice secrets
  • Spiced teas and medieval-inspired snacks
  • All materials and step-by-step guidance in a welcoming, small-group setting

📍 Location: Bookham, Surrey (10 minutes from the train station, with on-site parking). The exact address will be shared via email 3–5 days before the event.

Geanina is a qualified teacher, living historian and forager based in Surrey, England.

Geanina brings two decades of teaching experience to her immersive workshops, where history, nature, and hands-on crafting meet. Growing up in a rural village shaped her deep respect for the land and traditional skills, and her passion for herbal remedies and ancient crafts took root in the countryside.

As a living historian, Geanina brings history to life through her fascination with 15th to18th-century stillrooms, where household remedies, aromatic waters, and cosmetics were skillfully prepared by maids and gentlewomen. Often dressed in medieval or Tudor costume, she brings history to life with engaging demonstrations of traditional herbal practices, filling the air with the evocative scents of dried herbs, roses, and spices.
