Description

The Spott Session - Westward the Light

"Westward The Light bring a refreshing approach to their music, eschewing as they do the harum-scarum “speed-is-all” attitude of many of their contemporaries for a much more thoughtful and reflective way of looking at and presenting the music. Our audience was drawn in right away, and more than once we had that elusive and delightful moment of silence between the end of the music and the start of the applause that tells you that the audience is totally engaged with the performance." - Dougie Pincock- Director of the National Centre for Excellence in Traditional Music

Westward The Light is a remarkable new band, a collaboration between piano/fiddle duo Charlie Grey and Joseph Peach (BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award Finalists 2017), fiddle and viola player Sally Simpson (Catriona Hawksworth and Sally Simpson, Heisk), and guitarist and vocalist Owen Sinclair (Tanara, Inyal).

This band is the result of years of collaboration in a range of settings. Westward The Light a vessel for the members of the group to bring together an expansive knowledge of Scottish folk style, ethos and culture, isolating and expanding on significant themes to create a new expression of an age-old sound.

On fiddle, viola, vocals, piano, and guitar, the quartet creates a sound reflective of upbringings immersed in the nature and landscapes of Scotland. Elements of melodies are highlighted and explored by a varied instrumentation, audiences taken on an aural journey of Scottish sentiment, weather, culture and modernity.

"Westward the Light present an exceptional new take on Scottish Traditional music. With strong hints of a classical string quartet, this trad quartet know how to compose, making best use of the range of instruments. In particular the viola brought a depth and resonance to their music, and it was a joy to see the interactive connectivity of all players. This band deserve to go far." - Duncan MacInnes, Creative Director, SEALL(Skye Events for All)

Doors open and bar from 7.30pm, music starts at 8pm.
