At The Mint House - Home of Sussex Folklore, we will be revisiting our Talk & Tour format highlighting how architecture can tell us about the function, economy, environment and cultural heritage of the building.
The Mint House is a building with a fascinating and rich history. Dating to the 1540’s, the name would suggest that it was a site for minting coins but the mint in Pevensey had all but disappeared by the 12th century. It was reputedly the home or Dr. Andrew Boorde, physician to King Henry VIII and a young King Edward VI is supposed to have stayed here, but both stories are very dubious, being the product of the early C20th owners creating a new folklore for the building. Being beside the old Market Square, there is now evidence for it being an Inn built to cater for an upsurge in trade during the C16-17th.For Heritage Open Days, the Mint House will be exploring the theme, 'Architecture: The World Around Us'. Discover the origins of the building, how it related to the port of Pevensey, and what architecture can tell us about the economy, environment and cultural heritage of the building.
Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome. Pay and display parking and public toilets can be found opposite The Mint House.Each tour will be on the ground floor only and lasts around an hour. There are one or two thresholds to navigate.Advanced booking is essential. Tickets are free, but donations are most welcome.
